This tutorial explains how to connect a Yamaha Reface CP synthesizer to a Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol A49 keyboard via MIDI.
The main challenge: The NI Komplete Kontrol A49 sends MIDI only via USB, while the Reface CP lacks USB host mode capability. This means a direct connection between A49 and Reface CP is impossible.
What you need
- Yamaha Reface CP compact synth
- NI Komplete Kontrol A49 MIDI keyboard
- Computer with USB or standalone USB-to-MIDI host device
- Optional: Digital Audio Workstation (DAW)
Important: MIDI Channel
The Reface CP’s MIDI input operates continuously on channel 1 by default. No menu configuration required for MIDI reception.
Connection Options
Option 1: Computer-based routing
Use MIDI routing software like MIDI-OX, MIDI Patchbay, or your DAW to route the MIDI signal from the A49 (via USB) to the Reface CP (via USB or MIDI out from your audio interface).
Option 2: Standalone USB MIDI Host
If you want to skip the computer, you need a standalone USB MIDI host device. I recommend the Digital Life Stand Alone Midi USB Host (approximately €56 on Amazon).
This device accepts the USB MIDI output from the A49 and converts it to standard 5-pin MIDI DIN, which you can plug directly into the Reface CP’s MIDI input.
